How the scan reads your face

Your phone does all the visual work. Only numbers leave your device.

468 points per photo, plus one sharpness number: that is all that goes to the server. These come from a real face.

Two or three guided photos

The screen guides you: face straight on, well lit, at arm's length. You take two or three photos. Several photos beat one, because we keep the middle value of each measurement: a bad photo weighs less.

What your phone does

A face landmark model runs in your browser and places 468 points on your face. We serve this model ourselves: no third-party service is called during the scan.

The pose gate

Before measuring, a gate checks that your face is straight on. Turned, tilted or raised, it is rejected, because an angle changes the measured distances. If the screen rejects your photo, face the lens again with your chin level.

What leaves, what stays

Only numbers go to the server: the coordinates of the points, from which it calculates your rating, and the sharpness of each photo, which is part of no rating. The photo stays on your phone.

Their built-in browser handles the camera badly. Open LooksLadder in Safari or Chrome before you scan.
